And while not as iconic, Long has more depth as a character than the Genie did, if only because a flawed character is easier to write. For starters, in my opinion, Din is a better protagonist than Aladdin whose only real real motivation is "love at first sight." Aladdin would not hesitate to have all the riches in the world after being with Jasmine if given the chance, which he essentially wasn't. Then there's also the actual content of the story. I think the scene where Din tricks Long into flying him around is actually an example of them intentionally parodying Aladdin since it did actually play out somewhat differently.

Wish Dragon knows that it's similar to Aladdin, and it plays off that quite a bit while also being fairly different.

(though maybe a stretch) the antagonist's wish is what ultimately kills/imprisons him.Protagonist uses fake name extremely similar to his real name while pretending to be rich.Li Na's (Wish Dragon's Jasmine equivalent) father's right hand backstabs him for the wish granter.(Again, I don't think this is a movie made primarily by Sony Pictures Animation, just an acquisition they put their name on.)īefore I go on about why Wish Dragon is a great standalone movie that isn't a ripoff of Aladdin, you actually miss a few similarities (spoilers ahead, obviously) And I don't consider it some kind of artistic travesty that they did I just look at it the same way as Italian movies that clearly took inspiration from Star Wars, or Escape from New York, or The Road Warrior. It's a valid point that it's cribbing from a very successful existing movie - whether or not that movie was entirely original is irrelevant. (For example, I don't believe it started with the three-wish limit, which IIRC came from various European folktales - in fact, it was even in an older Disney movie, Darby O'Gill and the Little People - and while I would not be surprised if it showed up in Aladdin adaptations pre-Disney, it was probably only indelibly associated with Aladdin after Disney's movie.) Not all other tellings of Aladdin had all the same things. I think this is a mostly Chinese production.Īlso, the OP clearly meant this is copying story beats of Disney's Aladdin. If you ask me, I would bet that Sony barely had anything to do with this, and just acquired distribution rights.
